Sarah's Heavy Heart by Peter Carnavas Reviewed by Kathryn Duncan Sometimes less is more, and Sarah's Heavy Heart needs nothing more than the minimal, but very thoughtful, text and accompanying illustrations. Some books touch your heart from the opening sentence and Sarah's Heavy Heart manages to not only touch you the first time, but every time you read it. Author, Peter Carnavas, has managed to produce another book that looks at children's feeling and emotions. His first book, Jessica's Box showed how friendship comes when you are yourself, and with Sarah's Heavy Heart, he has shown how problems and worries can be made easier when shared. The text is simple, and straight to the point - something very important when writing picture books - every word counts and getting it right in fewer words is difficult. Peter Carnavas gets is right. Sarah is aware that her heart and her feelings are weighing her down and it is through her meeting with "the boy" that Sarah is able to share her problems. The second engagingly beautiful aspect of Sarah's Heavy Heart is the illustrations. An advantage of being the author and illustrator is that you get to put into pictures the images you have in your mind when you wrote the text. These illustrations are also delightfully simple, yet convey the emotion flowing through the story. The prominence of the giant red heart on each page draws your eye to it, letting the reader focus on the importance of the heart to the story. Sarah's Heavy Heart needs to be read and appreciated for all that it is, a beautiful story. | ||
